Resource Abstract:
NGDC's U.S. Coastal Relief Model (CRM) provides a comprehensive view of the U.S. coastal zone integrating offshore bathymetry with land topography into a seamless representation of the coast. The CRM spans the U.S. East and West Coasts, the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii, reaching out to, and in places even beyond, the continental slope. Bathymetric and topographic data sources include: NGDC's NOS hydrographic surveys and multibeam bathymetry; the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); and other federal government agencies and academic institutions. Bathymetric contours from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico project were also used. Digital elevation models (DEMs) of the Great Lakes, Southern Alaska, and high-resolution DEMs of U.S. coastal communities and territories are also available.

Additional information on resource:
The vertical datum for the source bathymetric data was generally mean sea level (MSL), but NGDC Tsunami Inundation DEMs were referenced to North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). Source topographic data were also in either MSL or NAVD 88. The differences between these datums have been corrected to MSL, however the elevation values may not be as accurate as you might like or need. Assume a vertical accuracy no better than 1 meter for any elevation values in the CRM.

evaluation Method Description  NGDC made every effort to obtain all available digital topographic and bathymetric datasets in the region for use in building the DEM.
ConceptualConsistency
measure Description  Datasets were visually compared internally and externally (with other overlapping datasets and satellite images and maps) in ESRI ArcGIS and Applied Imagery QT Modeler for identification of anomalous elevations or data inconsistencies. Where elevation inconsistencies occurred, the most recent and/or highest resolution data set was selected for use in that region. Elevations in the older and/or lower-resolution datasets were deleted prior to building the DEM.
