Dataset Identification:
- The National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) contains a seamless mosaic of the National Weather Service's (NWS) digital forecasts of precipitation probabilities. In collaboration with NWS National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and NWS Weather Forecast Offices (WFO), the central NDFD server ingests 5-km, 2-dimensional grids of precipitation probabilities, and creates experimental forecast data mosaics for the coterminous United States (CONUS), Alaska, Hawaii, and Guam.

- description The National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) ftp server is accessed once daily by the National Coastal Data Development Center. Precipitation probability forecasts for the United States are downloaded from this server. Data from the NDFD are provided in GRIB, Edition 2 (WMO 2001) format. The National Weather Service provides decoding software that will convert data into ESRI shapefile format. This decoding program is run at the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). This software has been slightly modified by the National Coastal Data Development Center in order to capture the date of the forecast as a field within the generated shapefile. The resulting shapefiles are loaded as ArcSDE layers and stored at NCEI.
