Office of Coast Survey Wrecks and Obstructions Database
Dataset Identification:
Resource Abstract:
The Office of Coast Survey's Wrecks and Obstructions database contains information on the identified submerged wrecks and
obstructions within the U.S. maritime boundaries. The data includes the position of each feature (latitude and longitude)
along with a brief description. Information to populate the database comes from what is currently available on the electronic
navigational chart (ENC) and Coast Survey's Automated Wrecks and Obstructions Information System (AWOIS) database.

The Office of Coast Survey is responsible for charting the Nation's waterways to ensure safe marine transportation and navigation.
Hydrographic surveying is a critical component of this process. The AWOIS and charted (Electronic Navigational Charts - ENCs)
wrecks and obstructions have been identified over the course of OCS' history and cataloged in a database for use in survey
planning and also for inclusion on the nautical chart suite. The database and associated mapping services are provided to
the public as a related service for general usage.

Access Constraints: None. Use Constraints: The database records are not comprehensive. There are wrecks that do not appear
on the nautical charts and wrecks on the nautical charts that do not appear in the historical records. Updates to database
are limited, with priority given to wrecks that may be hazards to navigation. We have removed reported wrecks that have been
salvaged or disproved by further investigation. Distribution Liability: None

The AWOIS database was initiated in 1981 and continues to be maintained, however maintenance may be discontinued at some future
time. ENC wreck features will reflect the most recent charted features on OCS' ENCs

Additional information on resource:
The data layers in this data set consist of: Automated Wrecks and Obstructions Information System (AWOIS) wreck features and
navigational obstruction features, as well as Electronic Naviational Charts (ENC) wreck features. The attribution across each
feature type has been standardized to be consistent. Not all attribution will be present for each feature in each layer, due
to the differing sources that have been used to populate the database.
