Resource Abstract:
description: These coverages show the elevation in feet above mean sea level of the base and top, the extent, the elevation in feet above mean sea level for the potentiometric surface, and the concentration in milligrams per liter (mg/L) of total dissolved solids in ground water of the Dakota aquifer in Kansas. The Dakota aquifer consists of sandstone bodies in the Cretaceous Dakota Formation and Cheyenne Sandstone. The coverages were developed from 1:100,000-, 1:175,000-, 1:500,000-, and 1:1,000,000-scale information. The data used to construct the top and base altitude coverages are from oil and gas exploration and production wells penetrating the Dakota aquifer. The data used to map the altitudes consist primarily of gamma ray logs and supplemented by drillers' logs in the Salina basin of north-central Kansas. Most of the data used to construct the potentiometric surface are from wells screened in the Dakota Formation. Elsewhere, the data are derived primarily from measurements made in wells screened in the Cheyenne Sandstone. The potentiometric surface contour interval is 100 feet. The total dissolved solids coverage's data are from the Dakota Formation, but also includes analyses of ground water from wells screened in the Cheyenne Sandstone and Longford Member of the Kiowa Formation. Its contour interval is variable and increases with increasing concentration.; abstract: These coverages show the elevation in feet above mean sea level of the base and top, the extent, the elevation in feet above mean sea level for the potentiometric surface, and the concentration in milligrams per liter (mg/L) of total dissolved solids in ground water of the Dakota aquifer in Kansas.
