World Total Petroleum System Summary Result Data, 2000 World Petroleum Assessment
Dataset Identification:
Resource Abstract:
This shapefile includes arcs and polygons that describe U.S. Geological Survey delineated Total Petroleum Systems of the World.
Each petroleum system is defined as a mappable entity encompassing genetically related petroleum that occurs in seeps, shows
and accumulations (discovered or undiscovered) that have been generated by a pod, or by closely related pods, of mature source
rock, together with the essental mappable geologic elements (source, reservoir, seal and overburden rocks) that control fundamental
processes of generation, migration, entrapment and preservation of petroleum. Total petroleum systems are described by U.S.
Geological Survey scientists on the basis of exploration and production histories, and extensive literature searches. Total
petroleum systems are identified with a numeric code derived from the numeric code of the World Geologic Provinces as defined
by the U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project. Most total petroleum systems are contained within a single geologic province,
but there are numerous cases where systems span more than one province. Summary results of the assessment are presented as
attributes of this shapefile.

For data management purposes the world is divided into eight energy regions corresponding approximately to the economic regions
of the world as defined by the U.S. Department of State. Except in the case of the United States, most region and province
boundaries are not controlled by the presence of political or administrative boundaries. Geologic province boundaries are
determined by World Energy Project Regional Coordinators and others on the basis of natural geologic entities and may include
a dominant geologic structural element or a number of continuous elements. Provinces are divided into Total Petroleum Systems
defined by the presence of source rocks, migration paths, traps and seals. Total petroleum systems are numbered from the geologic
province that they are most closely associated with and they inherit the first digit reference to the energy region. Because
many total petroleum systems overlap with one another, the coverage that this shapefile is derived from has Arc/Info region
topology. Each total petroleum system constitutes a region.

AbsoluteExternalPositionalAccuracy
name Of Measure Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report
evaluation Method Description
It is not possible to calculate a definitive measure of the horizontal positional accuracy of this coverage because it is
a composite data set compiled from a variety of sources using a variety of methodologies. Positional accuracy is dependent
upon the extent of geologic knowledge available about the area delineated for each total petroleum system. This includes the
density of oil/gas field centerpoints and well locations in the Petroconsultants Exploration and Production Database (1996)
and, in the case of Canada, the density of oil/gas pool centerpoints from the NRG Associates Inc. Significant Oil and Gas
Pools of Canada Database (1996) The maximum possible accuracy is twice fuzzy tolerance of 500 meters, or 1000 meters. Because
of the heterogenous variety of source data, generally of small-scale, used in delineating the province boundaries, there is
no datum or spheroid defined. At the average estimated compilation scale of 1:5,000,000, there is no geodetic control to define
a datum or a spheroid without introducing false precision.
