American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates for Coastal Geographies
Dataset Identification:
Resource Abstract:
The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing statistical survey that samples a small percentage of the population every
year. These data have been apportioned to 13 coastal geographies, and contain detailed demographic, social, economic, and
housing characteristics. They represent 5-year estimates derived from the ACS Block Group summary files. Detailed information
on the ACS data can be found at the Census Bureau's American Community Survey website and in their researcher's guide entitled,
"A Compass for Understanding and Using American Community Survey Data". Detailed information on the geographies the data are
available for can be found here: http://www.coast.noaa.gov/htdata/SocioEconomic/AmericanCommunitySurvey/AmericanCommunitySurvey_DataDescription.pdf

purpose:
The purpose of the time series demographic statistics data files is to provide users with socio-demographic information such
as population, age, structures, racial and ethnic composition, income contributions, and residential mobility in a format
that facilitates comparisons across time and space.

Additional information on resource:
Many of the goals of those involved in coastal management and policy include finding the balance in the coexistence of natural
ecosystems and human society, therefore a complete picture of the geographic patterns of human activity and its relationship
to the coastal environment is needed.

measure Description
Data estimated for counties and states compared well with data reported in the U.S. Census Bureau site. ACS data estimated
in other STICS geographies of interest (ex. watershed) were compared against data estimated for the same geographies of interest
when using Census 2010 estimates. The differences found were in the range of 2% difference.
