NOAA Climate Data Record for Mean Layer Temperature (Upper Troposphere & Lower Stratosphere) from UCAR, Version 2

Dataset Identification:

Resource Abstract:
The Temperatures of Troposphere / Stratosphere (TTS) (AMSU channel 7 and MSU channel 3) CDR is generated by using National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Europe METeorological Operational satellite-A (Metop/A) satellites. High quality radiosonde observations (RAOBs) identified by coincident Global Positioning System (GPS) Radio Occultation (RO) temperature profile measurements from Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) and Challenging Mini-satellite Payload (CHAMP) are used to calibrate the AMSU channel 7 measurements from multiple NOAA and Metop-A missions. The calibrated AMSU TTS from 2001 to 2014 are then used to calibrate MSU TTS in the same time period and then the calibrated MSU TTS are used to calibrate those overlapped MSU TTS from 1980 to 2001.

This high quality CDR for Mean Layer Temperatures in the Troposphere / Stratosphere (TTS) (AMSU channel 7 and MSU channel 3) shall help the scientific communities by supplying improved i) Analysis: comprehensive of integrated climate products, ii) Assimilation: model initialization, iii) Reanalysis: improving the reprocessing of other data and re-analyses, and iv) Predictions: predictions in multiple time scales. In addition, these high quality temperature records will support the scientific community in validating model predictions and enhancing understanding of the climate forcing mechanisms. The identified temperature datasets of climate quality can be used as references for many types of climate data from the surface to the stratosphere in the future. These datasets will also provide reliable climate information to policy and decision makers and resource managers, and support public discussion on key climate-related issues.

Description This dataset provides advanced scientific researchers a high quality Climate Data Record (CDR) of Upper Troposphere / Stratosphere Temperatures. The objective of this study is to use highly stable GPS RO data to identify high quality radiosonde data and sue the radiosonde data to calibrate MSU channel 3 and AMSU-A channel 7 brightness temperatures and to further use the calibrated MSU and AMSU brightness temperatures to construct a consistent climate data record. This dataset would help for climate temperature trend studies, climate model validation, and for decision makers to establish climate policies.
