Exploration and Well Status, Quarter Miles Cells - SaMiRa
Dataset Identification:
Resource Abstract:
Cell maps are created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of petroleum exploration, type of production as
indicated by final well status, distribution of production and well density in a given area; in this case, covering the SaMiRa
project area of interest. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent
whether oil and gas wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing,
dry or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved
from the IHS Energy Enerdeq, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells
in the United States. Cells were developed as a graphic solution to overcome the problem of displaying proprietary well data.
No proprietary data are displayed or included in this dataset. The data from IHS were current as of February 2016. This particular
cell dataset was created for the Sagebrush Mineral Resource Assessment project (SaMiRa). Please see the purpose section for
further information on SaMiRa.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) a mineral resource assessment for
locatable minerals and an inventory of leasable and salable minerals for seven Sagebrush Focal Areas (SFAs) covering approximately
10 million acres of Sage Grouse habitat distributed across six western states: Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana.
The USGS will integrate the best available geological, geophysical, and geochemical data with mineral deposit information
to provide a qualitative mineral resource assessment of selected locatable minerals in the SFAs and a review of the most important
leasable minerals, including energy resources, known to be present in the SFAs to help inform the land use planning decision
for long-term withdrawal of the SFA lands from mineral entry. This effort is referred to as SaMiRa within this document. Scientists
traditionally supported by the USGS Energy Program will provide a review of the location and mineral claim and lease information
for leasable minerals (i.e., oil, gas, coal, geothermal energy minerals, and phosphate deposits) that have a history of production
within the individual SFAs. This dataset is intended to support this effort. The purpose of the cell map is to display the
exploration maturity, type of production as determined by well status, distribution of production, and finally well density
in quarter-mile cells within the SaMiRa study area.
