Resource Abstract:
description: Historically the Pacific population of white-fronted geese has been monitored and managed based on wintering inventories conducted in California. In recent years it has become increasingly more difficult to conduct a reliable comprehensive wintering survey for this population due to distribution changes and increasing numbers of other species of geese. For that reason the Pacific Flyway Technical Committee decided to utilize a breeding population index estimate that combined the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta Coastal (YKD) Zone Goose Survey with the Alaska-Yukon Waterfowl Breeding Pair Survey (BPS), which covers the remaining breeding distribution of this population. To combine surveys the YKD Coastal Zone Goose Survey population index for white-fronted geese was used in its entirety (Fig 1.). The YKD transcects of the BBS were cut at the inland border of the YKD Coastal Zone Goose Survey and only the inland portions of these YKD transects were used to expand into interior: YKD nesting habitat (Fig. 1). The Bristol Bay segments of the Waterfowl Breeding Pair Survey were expanded into previously identified whitefront breeding habitat in the Bristol Bay Region (Fig. 1). The estimates for Bristol Bay, interior YKD , and the coastal zone of the YKD were added to determine the singles and pairs index and indicated total geese index.; abstract: Historically the Pacific population of white-fronted geese has been monitored and managed based on wintering inventories conducted in California.
